Guangxi steps up anti-porn campaign

GUANGXI is taking its pornography crackdown further by establishing centres across the province to try to convince people it is illegal.

Training centres are being set up in Nanning, Guilin and other main cities to educate residents on pornography laws.

Guangming Daily said management of relevant markets would also be tightened.

More than 130,000 pornographic items - 78,000 videotapes and 53,000 books and magazines - were recently destroyed in Guangxi as part of Beijing's latest crackdown.

The Government has seized more than 29 million publications and 35 million videotapes since the mainland pornography offensive was launched in 1994.

Publishing houses that were found printing pornographic material have been closed.

The director of a publishing house was recently sentenced to three years in prison for printing pornographic material and operating without a licence.

Beijing officials have vowed to focus on the eradication of illegal publications in the first half of this year.

Top priority has been given to destroying existing smuggling channels and improving the management of publishing houses.

In the first few weeks of January, police seized more than 80,000 illegal compact discs and 20,000 illegal publications.

Politically sensitive publications are also being targeted, but most of the destroyed material is pornographic.
