Now that Blockbuster Video has begun operations without much fanfare ('Brisk start by video giant', SMP, February 21), let us hope that its management does not make the same mistakes as KPS.
Blockbuster's managing director's confidence is a good sign, but he needs a good understanding of the local market.
Does he know what young people like to watch? Does he know about the smaller, but very successful competition? Does he know what the cheap alternative to KPS was when it went out of business? Pirated VCDs.
If Blockbuster does not provide better products and service than KPS did (and for a while they were the best in this part of the world), then the new owner will need much more than confidence and experience to survive for long in Hong Kong.
