Hong Kong giants Regal decide to focus attention on the Asian Basketball Super

Hong Kong giants Regal have decided to give May's Asian Basketball Confederation (ABC) Champions' Cup a miss to focus all their attention on the Asian Basketball Super League that will tip off in June, writes Aries Chow.

Regal, the 1997 ABC Champions' Cup winners and last year's runners-up, earlier pulled out of the local First Division league after having dominated it for a number of years.

Regal manager Stanley Au Kai-kwong said yesterday that the ABC tournament is far less appealing than the Asian Super League, which he believes is bound to expand in to a professional schedule.

While only four teams competed in the inaugural event last year, eight teams from eight nations will battle for a total purse of US$290,000 this year.

'We captured the ABC title once and we need another breakthrough,' Au said, adding that he is negotiating with a number of Chinese National players including Hu Weidong .

The opening game is likely to be held in Japan.
