President Jiang Zemin confirmed yesterday he would attend Macau's handover ceremony in December, according to Macau members of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

Mr Jiang reportedly told a group of CPPCC members from Hong Kong and Macau in Beijing yesterday morning that he would attend.

Macau's handover ceremony will be held at midnight on December 19, bringing to an end 442 years of Portuguese rule of Macau.

While the Portuguese side will hold a farewell ceremony on the evening of December 19, the Chinese side will organise a ceremony marking the establishment of the autonomous Macau Special Administrative Region in the early hours of December 20.

Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio has not officially confirmed his attendance at the handover ceremony. He will make a five-day official visit to Macau from March 18-22.

Macau is no longer a Portuguese colony but a Chinese territory under Portuguese administration until the handover.
