Opening a Telebet account with the Macau Jockey Club in Hong Kong could not be easier - all it takes is a phone call, an identity card and a start-up fee of $200.

From there, punters can place bets by dialling a Hong Kong number which transfers them to a Telebet operator in Macau.

Like Hong Kong Jockey Club outlets, the minimum bet is $10 and, according to one punter, the service has been available for four to five years.

The account holder said he had opened his account four years ago at the racecourse in Macau but began depositing cash at the Hong Kong centres when they opened soon after.

'You can deposit your cash at the centres and you are given a Hong Kong number to call which automatically switches to the Macau operator.

'You pick your horse, place the bet and the account is debited automatically,' he said.

The punter said Telebet cash-depositing facilities were available at the Macau clubhouse in the Shun Tak Centre, Sheung Wan, premises that were not a target of Tuesday's police raids.

'I Telebet there fairly regularly but if there is horse racing on here I will bet [on Hong Kong races]. I don't think it eats into the money I spend with the Hong Kong Jockey Club.' He said there was a dedicated account number available through HSBC and Hang Seng banks allowing cash to be deposited in the club's Telebet account automatically.
