Bombing of Yugoslavia was long overdue
I read with sadness about the local demonstration at the weekend against Nato bombing in Yugoslavia.
It is strange that some people look only at the bombing of Yugoslavia - of primarily military targets - as a crime.
Suffice it to say that these bombings are the last resort by the international community in response to the genocide in Kosovo, and have come far too late in my opinion.
The situation would probably be better handled by ground troops in Kosovo.
The problem there is that no Western nation can politically bear having its military personnel killed in action.
The only countries willing to supply ground troops would be Muslim ones, but I am sure Nato and the Serbs would both be averse to such a move, no matter how effective it might prove to be.
Finally, with all the comparisons to World War II, I wonder how Israel feels about the events as they unfold.
Surely the images of genocide are still fresh in the national memory of that nation. Surely the maxim 'never again' applies to the prevention of atrocities against all segments of mankind and is not limited to the Jewish people alone.
If there were ever a time for Israel to act in any form whatsoever, now would be it. And before complaints are made against bombing of Yugoslavian military targets, let us think of the people whom the bombs are trying to protect.
