Give fans live cup coverage

We, along with hundreds of thousands of fans in the Asia-Pacific region, were grateful to Star Sports for its excellent live coverage of the World Cup Cricket Championships in 1996.

Throughout the tournament, Star ran adverts promising a cricket bonanza for fans later that year, but we were never again to get live coverage of any serious cricket event.

The World Cup returns this summer in England and we understand that Star Sports/ ESPN Sports once again have the rights to show it in the Asia-Pacific region. Star has already begun to run adverts promoting the competition, but we understand it is only going to show cup highlights on its northern beam.

So, while the rest of the world (including North America, which has no serious cricket activities) watches the championships live, we in Hong Kong, while having a thriving Saturday and Sunday league and a noteworthy record of participation in the qualifiers for the World Cup, and being a force to reckon in Asian cricket outside the subcontinent, have to be satisfied with highlights.

We appeal to Star Sports, as the premier sports channel in the Asia-Pacific region, to think again and show the cricket World Cup live in Hong Kong.
