IIs tried to sneak in under truck

Two mainlanders attempted to sneak into the SAR with a shotgun yesterday by hiding under a truck.

The men, aged 21 and 23, who claimed to be former PLA officers, were discovered by police at the Lok Ma Chau checkpoint.

Police failed to find the two arrested men's accomplice, 28, who officers said had also sneaked in under the truck.

A home-made shotgun loaded with a cartridge, another three rounds of ammunition and a knife were found on the arrested men.

The shotgun was about 20cm long and its size and shape were similar to a pistol, according to Detective Chief Inspector Paul Renouf of the New Territories North crime unit.

The weapon was taken to the Ballistics and Firearms Identification Bureau to be examined.

The pair were caught when officers used a mirror to inspect the underside of the truck at the checkpoint.

The shotgun and ammunition were found in a knapsack carried by the 23-year-old, who claimed he was paid $6,000 to smuggle the gun into Hong Kong.

The men had no money or identification documents.
