A teenager was indecently assaulted by another inmate on his first day at a correctional institution and was teased about it afterwards, a court heard yesterday.

The victim, 19, was molested by a 16-year-old training centre inmate who told him not to tell anyone.

'He said 'if you tell any of the officers, I will molest you every night',' the victim said.

Eastern Court magistrate John Brennan yesterday convicted the 16-year-old of indecent assault. The teenager had denied the charge.

The victim, who shared a dormitory with five others, was assaulted on February 26. He finally reported the matter on March 3.

'I made the complaint because [the defendant] laughed at me every day after the incident,' he said.

Mr Brennan said the most telling evidence against the 16-year-old was his answer in a recorded interview.

He had said he was unhappy because the new inmate was going to replace him in the kitchen.
