Kan changes mind over Munro

Former champion trainer Brian Kan Ping-chee is keeping local racing guessing about a stable jockey for next season following his decision not to retain Alan Munro.

The dual Derby-winning jockey had been linked to Kan for a week and had several talks with the flamboyant trainer.

But yesterday Kan said he would not be signing Munro, although he originally had that plan in mind.

'It's not a big deal. I wanted him to ride some for me at the weekend but he wouldn't. I will decide in a day or two what I will do about a jockey,' said Kan, who also confirmed that he had spoken to French ace Eric Legrix.

'He called me and we have spoken about it. I am thinking it over,' said Kan.

Munro is currently retained by David Oughton and has commitments for him at the weekend which ruled him out of Kan's plans.

The runners from the Kan stable at the weekend meeting, which features the Champions and Chater Cup, will now be ridden by claimer Patrick P.H. Tse, who is attached to the stable of Tony Cruz.

Meanwhile, the Jockey Club's powerful Licensing Committee met for several hours yesterday but maintained a veil of secrecy over their deliberations and decisions.

Thrashed out were the positions for retained riders - with the presumed exception of the Kan job - and the four full-season Club jockey positions.

It is also understood that decisions were taken on the two half-yearly jobs available for jockeys riding directly for the Club and the lineup for local riders and apprentices.

Information secretary Wilson Cheng said: 'We were told it was going to be a long meeting and it has been decided to delay announcing any decisions until tomorrow because it would not be possible to get everything done and translated in time for a lot of newspapers.'
