The Department of Electronic Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has been renamed the Department of Electronic and Information Engineering to better reflect a shift in emphasis.

Head of the department Professor Siu Wan-chi said: 'Information technology [IT] has been developing at a phenomenal pace. It is a natural and inevitable development in the engineering industry to extend the core emphasis to information processing and computer intelligence.' He said the move signified a change in the direction of departmental strategies. This also identified its role in promoting IT within the university and the community.

Electronic and information engineering encompasses a variety of studies related to circuit and system design, computer systems and networking, information theory, software engineering, signal processing, image and pattern recognition, satellite communication and the management of large-scale networks, the university said.
