It has been a great season for Peter Ho and, as we approach the final few meetings, the rookie trainer is throwing out a determined challenge to David Hayes for the trainers' premiership.

His quest for the title has seen him send out a large number of his team on a few occasions. But it was one of the newcomers to his stable, Handbag Dragon (99-1), who went firmly into the notebook after last night's Happy Valley meeting.

The three-year-old was only having his second local start and was expected to find the 1,000 metres of the second event well short of his best. But Handbag Dragon surprised by showing some speed to be on the back of the leaders as they settled but lost contact as they went up the Rock.

At this stage he looked like dropping out but he picked up the bit again in the straight to run on strongly and finish fifth, about seven lengths behind the winner Winning Fever. It was a most-encouraging performance.TLP
