Five suspected robbers were arrested and a pistol, knife and surgical gloves seized when their van was intercepted in Central yesterday.

Police tracked the blue van after receiving an anonymous call at 3.50pm saying several gunmen were on their way from Kowloon to rob a goldsmith shop in Causeway Bay.

About half an hour later, the van appeared in Caine Road, Mid-Levels, where its licence plate was seen to have been replaced.

It was intercepted at the junction of Hollywood Road and Wyndham Street outside Central Police Station. One of the five men tried to run off but was caught after a chase.

'A suspected converted startling pistol and surgical gloves were found inside the vehicle,' Deputy Central District Commander Senior Superintendent Lee Wai-lam said. Initial investigations showed the gang was on its way to carry out a robbery, he said.

A knife was also found on one of the five suspects.
