Volunteers lend support

The Hong Kong Auxiliary Police Force is a voluntary body whose members perform part-time duties as police officers in support of the regular force.

Established in 1914, its primary role at that time was to provide support to the regular police during turbulent times and in emergencies. They have performed a variety of duties, including crime prevention, crowd and traffic control, and community relations.

The form and amount of such support depends on the operational policies and priorities determined by the Commissioner of Police.

New recruits are required to undergo 24 weeks of basic training which comprises law, police procedures, physical fitness, firearms, drills and practical exercises.

Every auxiliary police officer has to complete 96 hours of normal training, seven field days and a seven-day training camp annually.
