Computers 'an eye sore'

Spending long hours in front of computers and television is having a detrimental effect on students' eyes, according to a survey.

The study of 2,338 students at six primary schools in Sha Tin found widespread sight problems.

More than 30 per cent wore glasses, with the number rising at an alarming rate when they grew older. Fifty-six per cent said they had sight problems.

Eighty-four per cent felt their sight had worsened within a year, while about 70 per cent said they would not like to wear glasses.

Nearly half blamed short-sightedness on computers and television. Some said bad reading habits were to blame.

The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong, which conducted the survey, urged the Education and Health departments to issue a guidebook to students to protect their eyes.
