Yu's riding career under cloud after latest scrape
The riding career of talented apprentice Roger K. H. Yu is balancing on a knife edge.
He goes before the Licensing Committee later this week with the Jockey Club's racing management having put forward a strongly worded report.
This follows the claimer's most recent transgression when he absented himself without permission from the apprentices' hostel.
He is now confined to barracks until the end of the season.
It is the latest in a list of scrapes which Yu, from a family that also has elder brother Alex and sister Carol involved in local racing, has got himself into with racing officialdom.
Director of racing Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges is singularly unimpressed with Yu's most recent escapade and those before it.
'It is five seconds to midnight for Yu. Before it was five minutes. Racing management have put in a report to the Licensing Committee about Yu. It is up to the Licensing Committee to decide what to do about him,' said the top racing official.
For elder brother Alex, however, it is all systems go with trainer Ivan Allan having completed plans for both Oriental Express and Holy Grail to go to Japan for the Yasuda Kinen.
'Alex is delighted to be riding Holy Grail and he deserves the chance. It is a big occasion in Japan and he will benefit from it,' said Allan. 'Tony Cruz has given permission for Eric Saint-Martin to ride Oriental Express so we are all set to go.' The big mid-summer assignment for Allan is the historic attempt on the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes by Indigenous.
Douglas Whyte will be aboard and he revealed yesterday he would be in England at least three weeks before the King George.
