The Urban Services Department has defied a council inquiry request to provide a report on lazy sewer workers.

It is the second blow to the inquiry after 24 night-shift sewermen refused to testify at yesterday's hearing.

Inquiry chairman, Democrat Kam Nai-wai, accused the department of trying to cover up.

'They could not even tell us the exact number of people interviewed in the department's internal investigation,' Mr Kam said.

The Urban Services Department said it had launched disciplinary proceedings and it would not be appropriate to release details at this stage.
