The Baltic and International Maritime Council (Bimco) executive committee will ask its documentary committee to develop a quality clause applicable to bulk carriers.

The committee said the proposal was based on a request from the European Community Shipowners' Association (Ecsa).

'The clause is expected to include such elements as classification details, P&I cover details, and safe manning and ISM compliance information,' it said.

The committee sees the development as another important aspect of Ecsa's drive to ensure quality shipping.

Bimco's technical division has been involved in work on an automatic identification system (AIS).

The committee is investigating use of existing radar displays for a simplified AIS transponder signal to be sent simultaneously with a complete AIS signal.

Bimco has participated in the inter-secretariat group on voyage data recorder (VDR) requirements.

The group hopes to submit a paper to the International Maritime Organisation's nautical sub-committee in September requesting an extensive analysis of the cost and hardware implications of VDRs.
