Web site design skills and a message of caring for the environment proved a winning combination for two fourth formers.

More than 70 students from 34 primary and secondary schools took part in the contest organised by the Hong Kong Computer Society and Rotary Club of Sha Tin.

Clever use of animation, sound clips and text resulted in the team from Po Leung Kuk Centenary Li Shiu Chung Memorial College winning the competition's championship.

Yim Kai-cheung and Ng Wang-fai began designing their Web page in April and found it tough and challenging because they had not done it before.

Like other competitors they were offered a five-hour training workshop on Web design and Internet skills in January.

'It was difficult at first, but we read a lot of books and followed the on-line help documents to work out the images,' Wang-fai, 16, said. 'Time management and creative minds put our fancy ideas into a concrete outcome. We also wanted to communicate with the readers and get them involved with this site.' Classmate Kai-cheung, 15, believed the duo's self-learning ability helped them to tackle most of the technical glitches.

'We knew nothing at all at first and we made a lot of mistakes and had improved,' he said. 'Now we have a better sense of the environment and are eager to tell friends and parents how to act positively towards the environment.

'Good structure and presentation of the information will help the Net surfers understand what they can do to protect the already crippled environment,' Kai-cheung said.

The site has a user-friendly interface to display information on different types of pollution and attempts to tackle environmental problems.

Readers are also given 100 do- it-yourself tips to protect the environment. Links to other Web sites of green groups and government departments are also provided.

They displayed skills in HTML (hypertext mark-up language), Microsoft Frontpage, Javascript and Flash animation. All this helped present the information in an appealing way with a pop- up menu box.

Computer teacher and team mentor Lee Wai-man said the boys' self-learning skills could be used in other areas. They were judged on the originality and creativity of idea, power of presentation, Web design, content, information technology skills and sense of environmental awareness.

Lam Kwan-ha and Au Yat- nam of Po Leung Kuk Ho Sau Nam Primary School won the primary section contest.
