Troubled Yu to undergo counselling
Apprentice Roger K. H. Yu is hanging on to his racing career by his finger nails.
At a Hong Kong Jockey Club Licensing Committee meeting last night it was decided that Yu would undergo a period of rehabilitation and counselling and would appear again before the committee on August 30. Yu was accompanied to the hearing by his parents and his allocated trainer, Ricky P. F. Yiu.
The highly talented claimer is currently suspended having run foul of racing officialdom on numerous occasions.
In one recent instance, Yu was reported to have attacked his sister, fellow-apprentice Carol Yu, with a chair and used threatening language.
While Yu clings to his career, that of former champion apprentice, Jackie C. K Tse, is officially over. The one-time wonder boy of local racing was refused a freelance jockey's licence next season and offered a position as a senior work rider. He has the right of appeal.
Trainer Brian Kan Ping-Chee, who had earlier been refused permission to retain a stable jockey next season as he had not submitted a name by the time the deadline passed, was given a reprieve last night.
He is currently negotiating with a jockey in Europe and was advised he had until July 5 to submit the name.
