More to education than exams

I refer to the article by Elaine King headlined, 'Leaving through a child's eyes' (South China Morning Post, June 22).

The article focused on the issues concerning child psychology, which is not being given the serious attention it deserves in today's society.

Because Hong Kong is such a highly business-orientated environment, the educational authorities place great emphasis on academic results in schools, but often overlook the emotional needs of young people.

Student counselling has only been accorded a more important role in recent years, because of the distressing and unexpected behaviour of some young people. Through intensive single case studies our society is starting to learn about the importance of child psychology.

It would be helpful if the Government encouraged families to address their children's emotional needs in a more serious way, rather than putting so much pressure on children to do well academically.
