Students are always eager to achieve proficiency in English. English enables us to gain knowledge and experiences beyond that of our immediate environment.

And it also helps us to develop an understanding of and respect for people from different parts of the world.

To put it simply, English allows us to reach beyond our home, school and neighbourhood into the wider world.

English enhances our analytical and critical thinking.

Moreover, English is the most effective tool for expressing ourselves.

It plays an important role in shaping our character.

As an international language, English is important for communication.

It is essential for international trade, science, technology, economics, commerce and education.

English is the language of the tourist industry. You should know how to explain something to a visitor to Hong Kong.

And when visiting foreign countries, you should know how to communicate with native English speakers.

Remember, if we want to make Hong Kong a part of the global village and communicate with non-Chinese people, a good command of English is essential.

In Hong Kong, most subjects are taught in English. So, English is important for learning.

If you master the language, you can read books, magazines, write a good composition and discuss issues in English.

Also, if you want to study overseas, you may need to pass the TOEFL exam, which tests your English proficiency.

On the other hand, English opens the door to leisure activities and entertainment including TV, movies and radio.

You must master the language if you want to compete in the workforce. Employers want people who are fluent in the language. It also may mean higher salaries and opportunities for promotions.

So make an effort to be proficient in English.
