Sacked staff 'not properly compensated'

Twelve workers sacked after supporting one of their colleagues in an indecent assault complaint against their boss claimed yesterday they were not compensated properly.


The six men and six women were employed by the Taiwanese-backed China Jet International Courier company in Hunghom until two weeks ago when they identified a manager who allegedly committed an indecent assault.


The manager was arrested and subsequently released on $1,000 bail, pending further investigation.


The workers described their sackings as unjust and unfair.


They claimed they were not compensated according to labour laws as the firm failed to release their holiday pay and payments for those who had been with the company for two or more years.


They said they had been threatened with a pay cut of 30 per cent and cancellation of overtime allowances before their sacking, and believed the company was exploiting the situation.


'We have now learned the boss has replaced us with people willing to work for only $5,500, $1,000 down from our original starting salary,' one of the staff said.


Another worker said other employers were reluctant to recruit them because they were seen as troublemakers.


The Confederation of Trade Unions, handling the case on behalf of the workers, said the company's action was out of order. No one at the company was available for comment.
