Mainland 'Don Juan' meets his match at last

HE MAY not have been dragged down into hell, but Beijing's Don Juan is at least being forced to atone for his crimes.

''A-hai'', 19, is serving a five-year prison term for ''hooliganism'' after seducing dozens of women and leaving a trail of destruction behind him.

The Beijing Legal Daily newspaper, which documented his sordid tale of deceit and exploitation, said the young office worker even used the attempted suicide of a former girlfriend as a means of seducing other women.

''Xiao Yan realised she was being cheated, she felt she had lost everything and that her only solution was to kill herself,'' the newspaper said.

''She jumped off a balcony but ended up in hospital with broken legs. A-hai was unmoved by the news of Xiao Yan's attempted suicide; moreover he used the story to catch another girl.'' The newspaper reported how A-hai told ''innocent 19-year-old Xiao Mei'' he was deeply distressed by Xiao Yan's fate and had pledged to marry her and look after her.

''Xiao Mei was deeply moved by this and said she, too, wanted to help take care of Xiao Yan. After a few days A-hai had seduced Xiao Mei but soon lost interest in her and picked up Xiao Hong, Xiao Fang and another eight girls with whom he had sexual relations.'' The newspaper said A-hai was inspired to commit these evil deeds after he realised how easy it was for a tall, good-looking man with a successful career to ''catch girls''.

''After I tried the first time, I discovered the girls did not refuse me or detest me afterwards, so I became more and more adventurous,'' A-hai was quoted as telling police.

After half a dozen conquests, the newspaper said, A-hai became a ''sexual maniac driven by his lecherous desires''.

''He became a womaniser and a cheat, morals and honesty lost their place in his heart . . . having sex became for him a measure of his ability,'' it said.

The newspaper said A-hai had ''never found true love because he treated this sacred thing called love as a game''.

''He harmed other people but also harmed himself because evil behaviour must be punished,'' it said.

However, A-hai was not charged with rape or assault and had he been in the US it is more likely he would have appeared on Larry King Live than have been locked up in prison.
