Population rises 2.3pc
The population has grown 2.3 per cent in a year to reach 6.84 million.
That is a rise of 155,800 people compared with the figure in the middle of last year.
There were 52,100 births and 32,300 deaths between mid-1998 and mid-1999, accounting for 13 per cent of the population growth.
The balance of arrivals and departures showed a net inflow of about 136,000, the remaining 87 per cent of growth.
Across the SAR, the urban population could expand by between one and five million by 2016.
