President Jiang yesterday urged a joint fight against factors destabilising regional security at a summit grouping the mainland, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan.

Mr Jiang said an agreement should be reached between the five countries to fight religious extremism, national separatism, international terrorism and other cross-border crimes.

The five nations should increase co-operation and settle disputes through consultation, he said at the summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

The process of convening conferences among the five should also be speeded up.

The Chinese leader also urged more dialogue between the countries to ensure a nuclear-free zone in Central Asia, according to Xinhua.

On the economic front, Mr Jiang suggested that the five nations take part in reviving the ancient Silk Road by stepping up the construction of railways and highways to improve the area's transportation network.
