Door falls to street from trouble-plagued site

A heavy wooden door plunged on to the street from a hotel under construction in North Point yesterday - nine days after a 20-year-old woman died when a bucket of paint fell on her from the same site.

Detectives are investigating whether the door was thrown. They said it was the fourth incident at the site of the Harbour Plaza North Point Hotel in King's Road in the past two months.

A spokesman for hotel owner Cheung Kong (Holdings) said its main contractor suspected yesterday's incident was a deliberate act.

He said security measures and supervision would be stepped up.

The two-metre door landed on the pavement at about 12.30pm.

Officers conducted a floor-to-floor search of the building, which has been built up to the 33rd floor and interviewed workers.

'Initial investigations showed that it was a toilet door from one of the rooms. We believe it fell from somewhere above the 10th floor,' a police officer said.

Pang Suk-fong, 20, was killed when a full bucket of white paint fell from the building and hit her on August 28.

A metal bar and a piece of concrete have also fallen from the building.

On Friday, a 19-year-old worker sustained injuries to his back when an L-shaped piece of metal fell from the building.
