Developer blasted for lax security

Cheung Kong

A leading property developer has been accused of lax security after a series of incidents in which dangerous objects have fallen from a hotel site.

On August 28, a 20-year-old woman was killed instantly when a bucket of paint fell on her from the construction site in King's Road, North Point.

In the latest incident, a two-metre-tall wooden door fell from the building on Monday. In the past two months, a metal bar and a concrete slab have also fallen from the building.

Democratic Party member Tsang Kin-shing led a protest yesterday outside the Harbour Plaza North Point Hotel site at 663 King's Road, owned by Cheung Kong (Holdings).

The protesters shouted: 'Close the dangerous site.' Police believe Monday's incident was deliberate and protesters urged the developer yesterday to reinforce site security.

'The incident showed that the site has serious problems in security, allowing the culprits to get in,' Mr Tsang said.

'This poses dangers not only to pedestrians, but also to workers on the site.' A spokesman for Cheung Kong said the company had immediately instructed the main contractor to put more security guards on the site.

He said the incident was sabotage, citing the opinion of the Labour Department and police.

'The fact that the Labour Department did not believe it was an industrial accident and that police are conducting a criminal investigation speaks for itself,' the spokesman said.
