HK register passes milestone
The Hong Kong shipping register has reached the seven million gross registered tonnage mark, due to renewed efforts by the Government to promote it.
A Marine Department spokesman said Cosco had registered 11 bulkers since April, or more than 300,000 gross registered tonnes, including a 31,643 tonne bulker yesterday.
The Hong Kong register has 504 ships, including 40 container vessels, 138 bulkers, 21 general cargo vessels, one ore-bulk-oil vessel, three oil tankers, five chemical tankers and five gas carriers.
Of the 504, 225 are sea-going vessels, 76 river trade vessels and the balance are local craft including yachts.
