Focus on fashion boosts self-confidence

Two teenage groups jointly organised a summer programme to raise young people's confidence in themselves. This summer, more than 30 youngsters took part in a fashion show project co-organised by KELY Support Group and the Warehouse Teenage Club. The two groups offered a range of youth services, such as face-to- face client work, telephone hotlines, education and information activities, workshops as well as some outreach projects.

Over the past two months, 34 young people aged between 13 and 18 participated in a programme called 'Who am I?' Fashion Show Project '99.

It comprised a series of workshops aimed at boosting the youngsters' self-confidence through their participation.

KELY Support Group's outreach worker Shirley Man Pui-sze said that the aim was to provide the youths with an opportunity to reflect on their identity and image.

The project was based on a fashion show in which the youths co-ordinated, designed and presented their work before an audience.

Positive feedback 'The fashion show is only a medium for the young people to express themselves. The main objective is to let them understand themselves and build up their own style,' Ms Man said.

This is the second year of the project. Not only has it achieved its objectives, but it has also received positive feedback from participants.

STFA Seaward Woo College student Ada Yeung said of her experience in last year's project: '[It] was unforgettable. It not only provided a chance for me to make more friends, know more about myself and build up self- confidence, but also let me think about my future.'
