USUALLY loquacious Sam of the bespoke tailoring emporium is remaining surprisingly reticent as to whether it was indeed he who was the recipient of an unsolicited plug from Governor Chris Patten during his Stateside visit.

Sam was giving nothing away when we put the question to him yesterday, apart from nudging us towards a discreet corner of his Burlington Arcade shop where we could not help but notice a photograph stuck on the wall which showed a beaming Mr Patten havinghis inside leg measurement taken.

Good salesman he might be, but the Governor was quite right in sounding a note of caution on the 24-hour suit that has become the trademark of Hongkong's legion of tailors.

We know of one dignitary who had just such a number made and wore it to an important business meeting. He reached out to shake the hand of his host only to find the sleeve of his new suit beating him to it.
