Park plan to aid border trade
The Government is considering the construction of a 20-hectare business park in Kwu Tung near Sheung Shui that could include a high-technology complex.
The proposed business park would serve as a centre for border trading, wholesaling and product distribution, given its proximity to Shenzhen, a government source said.
A hi-tech complex was also being considered in the proposed park since the Government was stepping up efforts to transform Hong Kong into a technology hub in three to five years, the source said.
The northeastern New Territories site was also conducive to the Government's plan to establish a hi-tech corridor along the existing railway line, he said.
The proposed New Territories hi-tech complex would differ from the science park in Pak Shek Kok and Tolo Harbour, he said.
The proposed Sheung Shui-Lok Ma Chau railway, which would have a station in Kwu Tung, due to open early next century, would improve the business park's accessibility and viability, he said.
The source said the time-frame would be no impediment as the plan needed about three to five years to finalise.
The proposal is part of a comprehensive study which focuses on planning and development in the northeastern and northwestern New Territories.
It also identifies several strategic growth areas in Fanling, Sheung Shui and Hung Shui Kiu.
