Students display translation skills

THE final round of the fifth Inter-school Translation Competition was held recently at the Sha Tin Town Hall. The contest was organised by the Joint School Chinese Language and History Society.

The competition was aimed at arousing students' interest in translation and enhancing their language abilities. Twenty-one secondary schools participated in the preliminary contest.

Three schools - Marymount Secondary School, Queen's College and St Paul's College - were selected for the final.

The final competition was divided into two sections. In the written section, participants were required to translate two passages in one hour. In the oral and quiz section, participants orally translated some short passages and phrases.

In the written section, all three schools gave an impressive performance, with Marymount Secondary School getting the highest score. There was fierce competition in the oral section. Queen's College managed to beat Marymount Secondary school and won the champion title.

Marymount Secondary School was the first runner-up and St Paul's College came third.

The adjudicator, Dr S. P. Ng, senior lecturer of the Translation Department of Lingnan College, and the guest-of-honour, Mr Man Sai-cheong, said the participants showed high standards.
