Virtual reality games on agenda
Virtual reality and advanced multimedia games are expected to feature heavily in the park, mirroring hi-tech themes at DisneyQuest in Orlando and Chicago.
Government sources have said a hi-tech theme park would work well with initiatives launched by Tung Chee-hwa to make the SAR Asia's information technology hub.
Preliminary zoning maps already submitted by the Government to the Town Planning Board refer to a virtual reality 'technodrome' theme park.
Disney has been at the forefront of entertainment companies in exploiting new animation technology to create advanced interactive games. Its DisneyQuest arcade centres in Orlando and Chicago use powerful computers to create virtual reality environments. Another will open in Philadelphia next year.
'I expect to see 3D-simulation rides, say with volcanos and dinosaurs, interactive games involving multi-players and virtual reality rides,' said Democratic Party legislator Sin Chung-kai, representing the information technology industry. 'But the themes would probably have a strong local and Chinese feel.' At DisneyQuest in Orlando, people can ride jungle cruises or engage in virtual reality combat with each other as comic-book heroes, with the aid of high-resolution 3D animation programmes.
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology computer science professor Roland Chin Tai-hong said: 'I can envisage a virtual reality game with Jackie Chan.
'There is no doubt Hong Kong has the technology. The local movie industry could work on the contents.'
