Talk up business opportunity
I finally understand why Hong Kong people go to the cinema: to make telephone calls on their mobile phones. For the cost of a theatre ticket, they can sit in an air-conditioned room on a comfortable seat, a cold drink and a snack at hand and some of their close friends nearby while they chat to other friends unable to join them with their mobile phones.
This custom is growing so rapidly that I now expect to hear at least five to six tunes signalling incoming calls while I view the latest box-office hit. In fact, last week a man made an outgoing call halfway through the film.
I suggest that an entrepreneur make a successful business by providing all the conditions of a movie theatre but without the movie. I am sure the mobile phone addicts would be delighted. I can see them now, row upon row, chatting away while facing a blank screen. I would also be happy as I could see my movies in peace.
