Garley suit deadline
Twelve actions for damages have been launched on behalf of victims of the 1996 Garley Building fire, which killed 40 people and injured 80, two days before the three-year time limit expires today.
The lawsuits come more than two months after a secret compensation deal was struck between claimants in 23 cases and the companies they blamed for the November 20, 1996, tragedy.
The writs were filed in the High Court on Wednesday. Documents detailing the claims will be filed later.
Ryoden Lift and Escalator Co Ltd, Hop Cheong Engineering Co Ltd and Fong Fun-peng, trading as Kwan Kee Construction, are named as the defendants.
