AN offer to sample some of the best dishes in Hong Kong for a mere $500 has worked up a hearty response: more than 500 tickets for the ninth Great Chefs of Hong Kong charity event next Wednesday have been sold and the organisers are confident of raking in more than $1 million.

Signature dishes from 24 top restaurants will be offered at the event at the J W Marriott Hotel and participants include restaurants like Saigon and Milano, Cafe Deco, Dan Ryan's and hotels such as the New World Renaissance and the Ritz Carlton.

The event is organised by the Heep Hong Society for Handicapped Children. The money this year goes towards speech therapy for young children and training for their parents.

Nancy Tsang, the society's director, says this is an important issue because 60 per cent of children attending Heep Hong suffer from speech delay.

'This is one area which worries a great deal of parents, especially when a three-year-old still cannot say 'mummy',' says Nancy.

'We have sold 500 tickets and hope to sell another 300.'
