Disabled 'deterred from arts'
THE disabled are deterred from taking part in cultural activities because theatres are inaccessible to them, the Equal Opportunities Commission says.
Senior Equal Opportunities Officer Mariana Law Po-chu described the SAR as 'quite ignorant' of the rights of the disabled and said it had failed to comply with UN rules.
Non-binding United Nations guidelines say governments should take measures to provide access to information and ensure communication.
But many Hong Kong theatres failed to cater for the disabled, Ms Law said. 'The unfriendly design of the back stage areas deters them from performing,' she said.
A seminar and symposium organised by the commission and UN will be held in the territory next week to address the issue.
