The services sector is the engine of growth for our economy. With the imminent accession of China to the WTO, the rocket-paced development in information technology and the increasing dominance of e-commerce in world trade, it is vital that our service industries gear up and take on the challenges of the new century. It is important to add value, stay competitive, increase productivity, be innovative and provide quality service.

The Awards for Services Scheme plays an important role in heightening awareness of the importance of services to our economy, and in recognising high standards and encouraging excellence among Hong Kong's service providers.

I am very pleased with this year's record number of entries and their high standards. There is no shortage of worthy award candidates.

Winners or not, all the participating organisations deserve our recognition and compliments for their efforts. They are the ones who will take the lead in reviving our economy.

I would also like to thank the organising bodies and the government departments involved for their hard work in organising this event. This is a fine example of private-public partnership.
