School stresses commitment to quality education

Graduation did not mean an end to education, but the beginning of a new stage in learning, students were told.

Officiating at King Ling College's 5th anniversary, Hong Kong Institute of Education director Professor Ruth Hayhoe urged students to step up their efforts and be prepared for future challenges.

She said the institute and the college shared the same ambition to encourage self-learning and make effective use of information technology (IT).

'Together we can aspire to create a new culture of life-long learning without which society can never improve,' Professor Hayhoe said.

Teachers should inspire students with a love of learning. Without motivation, self-learning would not be possible, she said.

In his annual report, principal Y C Hui stressed the school's commitment to provide quality education, meet the demands of the new era and promote Chinese ethics and culture. Since its foundation, the school has advocated the use of Putonghua to teach Chinese subjects.

King Ling is among the first schools in Tseung Kwan O to receive government funding for a multimedia room and an IT co- ordinator.

On behalf of the sponsoring body, the King Ling Foundation for Education and Culture, school supervisor L F Hsu thanked all the parties concerned for their continued support over the years.

Mr Hsu was impressed by the efforts of the school to provide quality teaching. He was confident that with the facilities provided by the school's sponsoring body and the professional expertise of the staff, the school would be able to realise its vision and mission.

The school also held its open day as part of the programme to celebrate its 5th anniversary. Guests were taken on a tour of the campus to see exhibits from various departments, many of which had integrated IT into their classes.

Highlights of the afternoon included student musical performances, speeches and a tea reception.
