I was perplexed by Anson Chan Fang On-sang's remarks regarding the Government's decision not to stage any public fireworks on New Year's Eve, saying that 'the SAR should not be a copycat'.
Come on! This is not about trying to avoid becoming a copycat, this is about trying to make a once-in-a-thousand-year event, a memorable experience for the citizens. How is it that Beijing can afford both millennium and Lunar New Year celebrations, but Hong Kong, one of the richest cities in the world, cannot? It didn't have to be spectacular, a few minutes of fireworks at the stroke of midnight would have been fine.
