Two of the alleged bookmakers destroyed computer hardware, floppy discs and two telephone recording tapes as officers tried to break through the doors of a New Territories flat.

'The front door was thick and had a number of bolts and padlocks,' Mr Sin said.

'When our officers broke through the door, a computer's central processing unit was being burnt on top of a stove and a floppy disc was being crumpled.

'Two telephone recording tapes were thrown out of the window but later recovered in the street.' A couple were arrested in the unit.

Mr Sin believed there was a 50-50 chance of recovering the damaged items and information stored on them.
