We thank Dr Wong Yee-him, Kowloon City District Councillor, for his comments on the Millennium Extravaganza at Happy Valley on New Year's Eve (letter, South China Morning Post, January 15).

We would like to assure Dr Wong that lots of detailed planning and co-ordination had gone into the venture. Overall, the desired visual impact was achieved. Clips of the Chief Executive and other VIPs during the countdown were featured repeatedly in many subsequent TV broadcasts, both locally and overseas.

Our planning did not call for the show to be a protocol-dictated event. Rather, the aim was to make it casual and relaxed, with the Chief Executive and other leaders celebrating the arrival of the new millennium in the crowd. They were present to usher in the New Year and not to open a new session of the Legislative Council. It was that time of the year to let your hair down and go for impromptu comments.

Earlier in the evening, the Chief Executive's official millennium address had been transmitted on local TV stations.
