Video interviews delayed

Plans to install video equipment in the Immigration Department's interview rooms at Chek Lap Kok have been delayed because they are located in an area of 'high commercial value' and must be moved elsewhere.

Deputy Director of Immigration Choy Ping-tai said money was available for the equipment but installation could only take place after the rooms had been moved within the airport's restricted area. But it was not known when that could be done.

The equipment will help to show if confession statements have been made voluntarily.

Despite the lack of videotape facilities, the assistant director of immigration, Mak Kwai-yun, assured members of the Legco special security panel meeting that senior officials would conduct surprise checks at the interview rooms.

'Last year I conducted surprise checks three times there,' he said.
