Boyfriend Daniel loses out in sales

Hello Kitty is such big business - more than US$1 billion (HK$7.7 billion) a year in sales - that when Sanrio decided recently to introduce a boyfriend for Hello Kitty named Daniel, there was a story about it in the Asian Wall Street Journal.


The article suggested a bonanza was at hand for Sanrio, but it was heartbreaking news for the happy couple, who will be forced to live apart in the name of sales.


'To encourage consumers to buy more items, Sanrio will avoid featuring Hello Kitty and Daniel together on products,' the Journal said.
