Unacceptable extravagance

I read with interest the report discussing the English School Foundation's (ESF) purchase of an $18.5 million, 28,000-square-foot flat (South China Morning Post, February 23).

Although I agree with the ESF that at present it is better to buy than lease, I can see no justification for the purchase of this particular property.

It would be interesting to know the logic behind the decision to purchase at Stanley, when there are many excellent properties at more easily accessible locations; and why so large? There may be a requirement to have a suitable area for entertaining and receiving visitors, but even the Chief Executive, whom I suggest has a greater justification, has no requirement for such a large premises.

Hong Kong as a whole, both private and government, is seeking ways to save money and yet it appears that the ESF is being needlessly extravagant.

I presume, as ESF appears to be so well funded at present, that there will be no suggestion of further rises in ESF fees in the near future.
