Crackdown call as comic sold with sex toy

A crackdown on comics was urged yesterday after one publisher gave away a sex toy. The adult comic - which has previously given away underpants and condoms - gave away the sex toy in its March 1 issue.

The promotional strategy has renewed the debate over regulating the industry - a comic was distributed with give-away metal knives last summer.

Democratic Party legislator Andrew Cheng Kar-foo said the publisher had gone too far. 'It is a naked attempt to promote the comic by selling sex and violence in a market of fierce competition. I fear the industry may run out of control.' He urged the industry to regulate itself to avoid government intervention. All pornographic and violent comics should be made available only in licensed shops, he said.

Veteran comic writer Tony Wong Yuk-long, chairman of the Hong Kong Comics Federation, condemned the publisher, Sun Century, which he said was not a member of the federation.

Sun Century was not available for comment. The Television and Entertainment Licensing Authority said it had received no complaints over the comic.
