OCTOGENARIAN Communist Party leader Mr Pang Zhen was seriously ill and admitted to hospital, his son said in Guangzhou yesterday.

Mr Fu Rui said Mr Pang's illness turned ''serious'' about six months ago.

''He is now being treated in a hospital,'' said Mr Fu, who is head of the Guangdong Organisation Department.

''Those [foreign] reports about his [Mr Pang's] health were not totally groundless,'' he added. It was reported Mr Pang suffered a serious stroke and had been put on a life support system in a Beijing hospital.

Mr Pang, who no longer held any party and government position, was one of the ''eight immortals'' including patriarch Mr Deng Xiaoping and former president Mr Yang Shangkun.
