Taxpayers are to be asked to pay an extra $18.3 million because of over-spending on engineering works on the Central Reclamation project completed three years ago.

In a document to the Legco Finance Committee, the Director of Territory Development says the approved project estimate of $307 million is now insufficient.

The project, which was supposed to be completed in 1996 but was not finished until September 1997, was delayed because of unexpected technical difficulties and bad weather, according to the paper.

Much of the extra costs went to site staff costs - a total increase of $12.4 million.

The request will be discussed at next Wednesday's Finance Committee public works sub-committee meeting.
