Asia Satellite Telecommunications (AsiaSat) plans to unveil a broadband satellite-delivered Internet service in conjunction with a joint-venture partner, according to company spokesman Winnie Pang.

The joint venture will be based in Hong Kong and will mostly sell wholesale capacity to corporations and Internet service providers, Ms Pang said.

She declined to reveal the identity of the joint-venture partner.

The new services are likely to use AsiaSat's existing satellite capacity.

With three satellites in orbit, AsiaSat can provide coverage of 60 countries from Turkey to New Zealand, Ms Pang said.

The multimedia satellite broadcast would support voice and data transmission, though the company expects that data-intensive uses such as video-conferencing will be more common than voice traffic. Speeds, hardware configuration for receiving the services (for example, through direct-to-computer terminals or by dialling up to a local hub), method of upstream data transmission and specific services to be made available would vary depending on the configuration service providers chose, Ms Pang said.
